Web Service includes any piece of software that makes itself available over the Internet and uses a standardized XML messaging system

Web Service comprises of some content, or some process, or both, with an open programmatic interface. Simple examples are: currency converter, stock quotes and dictionary. More complex examples: travel planner, procurement workflow system. WEB service has the following characteristics:

Internet-based application that performs a specific task and complies with a standard specification.

An executable that can be expressed and accessed using XML and XML messaging.

Can be published, discovered and invoked dynamically in a distributed computing environment.

Is platform and language-independent.
