Prototype Design and Development

One of the best ways to test the usability and suitability of an application software is to develop a prototype rapidly prior to committing to large scale development. The idea is to build a replica of the product, simulate the look and feel of it, agree on the interfaces and reports and bring out many of the complex development challenges up-front.

The replica can be shown to customers to determine if it is really what they have in mind. If the prototype does not meet expectations, it is early enough in the development cycle to redesign and accommodate changes and recommendations within an agreed timeline.

Developing a software prototype frequently leads to a better understanding of the application requirements, thus improving the system design. Prototyping is a highly recommended approach because review of the prototype enables users, financiers, project managers, developers and other key stakeholders to agree on how an application should look (e.g. screen layouts, reports) and work (e.g. flow of control, error handling).
